My First And Last Recipe Exchange

Call me a dork, but I'm sorta excited that my friend Sam invited me to join her e-mail recipe exchange.

Yes, I realize it's a chain letter, but at least there is no financial scam involved. The goal is to get lots of new recipes, which sounds like fun to me.

Here's the deal:

You email a favorite, easy recipe to the first person on the list, move the second person up, put your email address in their place, and then send the email out to 20 or so of your friends. If no one breaks the chain, you’re supposed to get 20 recipes sent back to you.

I quickly sent out my recipe for my new go-to recipe Orecchiette with Roasted Broccoli and Walnuts.

Most of my friends e-mailed back immediately politely declining. Apparently, these e-mail recipe exchanges are quite popular and they've already received a ton of these requests. But, it's a novelty for me since nobody has ever asked me before -- until now, I wouldn't have had a recipe to contribute.

Luckily, a couple of people have taken pity on me and though they declined to officially participate, they've passed on some fave recipes.

Here is one I'm looking forward to trying:

Terry's Ful Mudammas (Broad Beans in Sauce)

Ingredients

• 2 cans (15-ounce each) cooked fava beans

• 6 cloves garlic, or to taste

• 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste

• 1 Tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed

• 1/4 cup olive oil

• 1 1/2 Tablespoons parsley, minced

Directions

1. Press the garlic cloves through a garlic press into a medium bowl.

2. Mash the garlic and salt together.

3. Next, add the lemon juice, olive oil, and parsley to the garlic mixture and combine thoroughly.

4. Drain the beans well, rinse, and put beans into a large pot over low heat.

5. Add garlic mixture and stir with a wooden spoon to combine thoroughly.

6. Serve warm with the garnishes arranged on a platter.

In fact, I'm heading out now to buy some fava beans. I'll let you know how it goes.

And I promise not to send out anymore e-mail chain letters! I don't want to test the bonds of friendship any further.

It's Me, Mom - Good decision not to send out any more chain letters. I'm not too sure about the fava beans recipe. Actually, I don't think I've ever tasted fava beans. Let me know how the dish turns out. Maybe I'll have Dad give it a try. He's into veggies and flax these days, but I'm sure he'd like to try this recipe.

I've got to agree with your mom on the subject of chain letters. Also, with so many amazing recipe websites (epicurious.com, for one), it seems to me like you should never be without a recipe if you need one. The recipe you got looks excellent! Fava beans are my favorite bean!

Well, I tried out the Ful Mudammas yesterday and it wasn't as good as the prepared version they sell at the Park Slope Food Co-Op.

Hi -- I'm new. Just sent some good friends the recipe exchange e-mail. Prefaced it by saying that the person listed at the top is a very close, dear friend, and would they please send her a recipe? I'm shocked at how many people said no. Several talked about scams, identity theft, and not wanting to share their email address with strangers. Okay, fine, but could they at least send my friend one lousy recipe? I thought maybe I was out of the loop on some notorious phishing scam or something, so I Googled "recipe exchange chain email" and your blog was the first one that came up. I'm still baffled. Hope you get a better outcome than mine. Cheers, Mili

Boy, people have really gotten paranoid when they think a recipe exchange is an excuse for getting their personal information. We're not asking for social security numbers and bank account numbers. Just an easy recipe! I'm with you Mili. That's lame!

I've also received a couple of these & what perplexed me is the math. The message I got said the same as you described, except that you would get 36 recipes back. I don't see that & 20 is incorrect also. If I send the message to 20 friends & they move me up to spot #1 then EACH send it to 20 friends, that's 400. So, if everyone does it, you would receive 400 recipes. That is of course if everyone does it (which obviously they won't).

The math is what puzzled me, too.

I know it three years later, I just received my first recipe request, strange that it's from someone I haven't heard from in two years.

I love CHOW.COM Their braised white beans with chard, (I use kale) is to die for. I only cook with canned beans, and this recipe is perfect.

Thanks for posting, Lane. I'll check out that recipe. Sounds yummy!
