Kitchen Gadgets

Now that I'm turning into a foodie (well, a newbie foodie), I've been thinking it's time to invest in some helpful tools of the trade. In other words, I've decided I need more unnecessary crap in my kitchen.

"Honey, do you think I should get an immersion blender?" I asked Avo yesterday.

"Why in the world would you need an immersion blender?" asked Avo. "What the Hell is an immersion blender anyway?"

"It's a hand blender. And remember back in October when I was trying to make broccoli soup and I made a mess by trying to puree it in the blender? It would have been a lot easier with an immersion blender."

Given the limited space in our kitchen and the fact that Avo still hasn't forgiven me for devoting an entire shelf to the rarely used crock pot, he quickly nixed the idea of an immersion blender.

"How often do you make soup anyway?"

This is coming from the same guy who asked for an electric pepper grinder for his birthday! You would think he would understand my need for an immersion blender. Well, maybe for my next birthday.

Nearly 10 years ago when Avo and I got married, we registered for six brandy snifters and a dozen champagne flutes! What were we thinking? Were we stocking up a bar or a household? If only I could register now when I actually know a thing or two about what sort of pots and pans and cooking utensils we need. You could be certain that an immersion blender would be on the list.

What kitchen gadgets could you not live without? And which ones sit unused in your kitchen cabinets?

I totally love my Braun immersion blender! Can't beat it for soup. And whipped cream. Best thing about it is that it's super easy to clean. Also, you can control how 'blended' your soups are - not so easy to do in a regular blender. I like to sort of half-blend soups, so a little texture is maintained.
Also - I just bought a Cuisinart rice-cooker/steamer at a yard sale (it's warm enough for yard sales here!) and it is dreamy. My favourite kitchen gadget, though - my "old faithful" - is my Champion Juicer - bought it 2nd hand from a friend 20 years ago and it's never failed me. IMO best juicer on the market (also easy to clean - huge consideration), AND you can make nut butters with it! Homemade almond butter! Cashew butter!

It's Me, Mom - I LOVE my KitchenAid mixer. I burned out a couple of hand mixers and even gave one away to an old girlfriend of your brother's (she disappeared soon afterwards) before I sprang for the KitchenAid. As for small items, a 5 quart Oxo mixing bowl and a red xyliss rubber spatula are my favorites when I bake. Dad said he'd love an immersion blender, but he rarely makes soup and I know he'd rather have a new bridle for his horse anyway. So, I'll go along with Avo and nix the immersion blender.

As I volunteer at the animal shelter thrift shop I'm always looking in the kitchen ware department to see what I can pick up (I get things half price). I do like gadgets, but most of them sit in the pantry without being used. Maybe I should have a garage sale of my own and invite Muffy.

LOVE the immersion blender. Soups, sauces... used it once or twice for pancake batter, but that's really overkill.
My new fave gadget is a simple crinkle-cut knife. Just made matza ball soup and the carrots are so pretty in it! Also, my 5-year-old gets in the act, he loves cutting cucumbers with it (they're soft enough that I don't think he'll cut himself) and he eats every other slice!

Mom, maybe you can buy me a KitchenAid Mixer for my next birthday! Meanwhile, keep a lookout at the thrift store for some good kitchen gadgets!

I also love my immerson blender. I use it for soup and tomato sauce. The model I have also comes with a food processor attachment. It's great for chopping onions and fresh herbs. I also love my Kitchen Aid mixer. It's the best baking tool I've ever had.
